Surrender Policy

At this time, Wings of Love Bird Haven is at capacity. We are only able to accept parrots when space becomes available through adoption, or in the case of a documented medical emergency. If you are seeking to surrender a parrot, please complete our Surrender Form and then text 214-674-7995 to notify our staff that the form has been submitted. Please note that all required testing fees and sponsorship fees for a minimum of three months must be covered by the surrendering individual or family.

Before You Surrender: Before proceeding with a surrender, we ask that you carefully consider your decision. Once a parrot is surrendered to Wings of Love Bird Haven, the bird becomes a permanent ward of the sanctuary. At that point, ownership is fully transferred to Wings of Love Bird Haven, and the parrot cannot be returned to the surrendering individual or family. This policy is in place to provide stability and consistency for the parrots in our care and to support their long-term emotional and physical well-being. We appreciate your understanding and thoughtful consideration before moving forward.

Medical Testing Requirements

All parrots surrendered to Wings of Love Bird Haven, Inc. are required to undergo medical testing for specific avian diseases before they may be introduced to our resident flock. This ensures the continued health and safety of our birds and allows adopters to feel confident in the health of their future family member.

Samples are collected during the first few days of quarantine and sent overnight to an avian diagnostic laboratory. Test results are typically received within three (3) business days. Once negative results are confirmed, the parrot may be transferred into the main parrot buildings.

Avian Polyomavirus — $35
PBFD (Beak and Feather Disease) — $35

DNA Sexing — $30

Required Tests by Species

Each parrot must receive the following minimum required testing upon surrender:

Budgies: Chlamydia, PBFD
Lovebirds: Chlamydia, PBFD
Quakers: Chlamydia, PBFD, Pacheco’s
Parrotlets: Chlamydia, Pacheco’s
Conures: Chlamydia, PBFD, Pacheco’s, ABV
Amazons: Chlamydia, Pacheco’s, ABV
African Greys: Chlamydia, Pacheco’s, PBFD, ABV
Eclectus: Chlamydia, Pacheco’s, PBFD, ABV
Macaws: Chlamydia, Pacheco’s, PBFD, ABV
Cockatoos: Chlamydia, Pacheco’s, PBFD, ABV
Lorikeets: Chlamydia, Pacheco’s, PBFD, ABV

If symptoms or concerns are observed during intake or quarantine, additional testing may be required. Any additional testing will be discussed with you at the time of surrender.

Sponsorship Requirement

In addition to testing fees, we require a monthly sponsorship donation to help offset the costs associated with caring for your parrot, including food, toys, medical care, utilities, and labor.

Sponsorship is required for a minimum of three (3) months following surrender. You are welcome to continue sponsoring your parrot beyond this period if you wish.

Please be as thorough as possible. If you verbally told your representative, it is still important to write anything else you can think of here.

Filling out this form does not guarantee a spot for your bird. All surrenders will be approved by the Executive Director when we have the resources available to house the bird.
